thyssenkrupp is recognised in GM’s supplier awards

thyssenkrupp is one of the leading suppliers for General Motors in South America through its Steering division. The recognition was received on the 28th of November in the Supplier Quality Excellence Awards held by the OEM in Sao Paulo State. This is the second year in a row thyssenkrupp receives the award. Last year, Springs & Stabilizers division was also recognised by GM.

In this 7th edition of the award, the automotive manufacturer recognised 62 suppliers from the South American region that achieved high quality levels in 2018. The evaluation considers 13 specific performance and quality criteria, such as punctuality in delivery, providing components and/or subsystems within the required quality metrics, having an appropriate programme management system, and others.

“We are very happy with this award. Being recognised for our performance with our customers is a source of pride and shows us that thyssenkrupp’s innovation in driving technology, quality excellence and safety puts us at the forefront for meeting the automotive industry’s future challenges”, says Luciano Farias, CEO of thyssenkrupp's Steering division in Brazil.

The Steering unit in Brazil manufactures automotive steering systems at the São José dos Pinhais plant in Paraná State. Last year, the plant expanded its portfolio with the production of electric steering systems, also known as EPS (Electronic Power-Assisted Steering), which are essential for developing solutions for semi-autonomous and autonomous vehicles.

Globally, thyssenkrupp has become one of the leading manufacturers of electric steering systems. At its innovation centres in Europe, the company has developed technologies for the cars of the future, such as steer-by-wire systems that are paving the way for new car interior architectures and increased passenger comfort. In the autonomous driving area, the company is also working with artificial intelligence in partnership with IBM for improving driving experience and driving safety.

thyssenkrupp and the automotive industry

thyssenkrupp is one of the largest global suppliers of materials and components for the automotive industry. Nine out of ten vehicles manufactured in Brazil are equipped with components produced by the company. In addition, one in every three trucks has thyssenkrupp components.

The product portfolio that thyssenkrupp offers the automotive industry includes engine components (camshaft assemblies, cylinder head modules and crankshafts), suspension components (steering systems, shock absorbers, springs, and stabiliser bars) and assembling services (shaft modules).

In Brazil, the company has automotive plants in Ibirité, Poços de Caldas and Santa Luzia (MG); São Jose dos Pinhais (PR); and in Campo Limpo Paulista and São Paulo (SP).

In fiscal year 2018/2019, thyssenkrupp's global sales to the automotive industry totalled close to 10.8 billion euros. Customers include virtually every major automaker in the world.
