Fispal Tecnologia 2017: thyssenkrupp introduces technology that guarantees healthier foods with larger expiration periods
Healthier foods, free from pathogenic microorganisms and with larger expiration periods. By using High-Pressure Processing (HPP) technology, this not only is possible, but also a reality in industrial scale. thyssenkrupp, through its Industrial Solutions business area, introduces this solution to the Brazilian market during the 2017 Fispal Tecnologia trade show held at the Sao Paulo Expo, in Sao Paulo, from June 27th to 30th.
Instead of using heating and chilling processes to kill germs, fungi and bacteria, as it occurs in conventional pasteurization, the solution by thyssenkrupp consists of applying pressure of up to 6,000 bar (equivalent to the pressure made by the weight of three 747 aircrafts on the surface of a smartphone) to pasteurize the product. This way, all microorganisms are eliminated without making the food lose its nutritional, flavor and appearance features. It is worth highlighting that the process does not use any type of chemical additive or preservative, only potable water and electric power.
Another advantage is that the solution can be used in products already final packed in plastic or vacuum, which, in addition to preventing recontamination, extends the shelf life up to four times (when compared with fresh in natura foods) and facilitates the transportation logistics, allowing the industry to extend the distribution.
The HPP technology guarantees a product that is 100% organic and can be applied to different types of foods, such as produce, meats, fish, seafood and juices. In addition to supplying the technology, thyssenkrupp also provides engineering services and all machinery necessary for the operation of a full high-pressure processing plant including automatization. The equipment items offer high reliability and robustness, and are also easy to operate and maintain.
Extraction of natural substances free from solvents
Another novelty thyssenkrupp will present at its booth at the 2017 Fispal Tecnologia is the Supercritical Extraction Process for extracting natural substances from the feedstock by applying a high pressure process using supercritical CO2. This technology allows extracting valuable products found in grains, herbs and leaves, like hops, essential oils, aromas, natural pigments, among others, fully preserving their properties. It enables both improving raw materials, for example by removing pesticides or decaffeinating coffee and tea, and also purifying them, for example by recovering solvents from synthesis products and removing contaminants from the soil.
The Supercritical Extraction process by thyssenkrupp can replace conventional solvents, such as methanol, ethanol, methylene chloride, hexane, etc., which are toxic. The substances dissolve at a much higher rate in supercritical fluids than what is expected in certain vapor pressure, and the CO2 is particularly adequate for extracting natural substances. At temperatures around 31°C (87°F), it is possible to lightly treat natural substances. Additionally, the CO2 can be obtained at relatively low prices, making the cost of the solution quite attractive.
Leading-edge technology
The solutions by thyssenkrupp are fully compatible with the Industry model 4.0. The equipment items are supplied with a system that integrates concepts from the Internet of Things and industrial automation. They work in an interconnected manner, can talk and exchange commands with each other, store data in the cloud, identify flaws and make corrections without the need for human intervention, guaranteeing more intelligence to manufacturing.
