thyssenkrupp to supply new coke oven battery to ArcelorMittal in Brazil
– New battery improves environmental performance and plant efficiency
– thyssenkrupp expands its business in the industrial plants market in Brazil
thyssenkrupp through its Industrial Solutions business area has recently won a contract from ArcelorMittal to supply a new coke battery for the Tubarão steel plant, located in the Espirito Santo state in southeastern Brazil. The new coke battery will replace an existing one thus ensuring the production of 600,000 tons of coke per year.
Paulo Alvarenga, CEO of thyssenkrupp South America: “This order is a further important milestone in the close and longstanding partnership with our customer ArcelorMittal. We have been working together in various projects for more than 15 years and are happy to again contribute our experience gained in building hundreds of coking plants worldwide. Just like our customer, we thereby attach particular importance to environmental protection. To reduce coke oven emissions to a minimum, we will integrate the latest environmental technologies into the new system.”
thyssenkrupp will provide engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) for the entire coke battery containing 49 coke ovens in total. It will replace one of the three original batteries of the coking plant which were also designed by thyssenkrupp in the early 1980s. The construction is expected to start in mid-2019. During the peak of the works, more than 700 jobs will be created.
The turnkey contract is another important step within the regional strategy of thyssenkrupp Industrial Solutions to grow in new industrial segments in South America: “Over the last two years, we have used our solid base in the mining and cement industries to expand our market presence in South America to new segments. Besides the steel industry, those include the chemical and fertilizer industries as well as the energy sector. Our strategy is to combine global expertise with speed and local experience. This contract is another evidence that we are on the right path”, adds Alvarenga.
The new battery will help reducing the environmental impact of the plant while at the same time being operationally compatible with the existing batteries. The latest generation of the EnviBAT pressure regulation system and an advanced heating system will ensure a high quality of coke and significantly reduced emissions. The project is part of ArcelorMittal's new environmental investment plan in Brazil.
With state-of-the-art technology and expertise proven through the construction of more than 100,000 coke ovens and associated gas treatment facilities around the world, thyssenkrupp has been a global leader in this segment for more than 130 years.
