thyssenkrupp Marine Systems to attend LAAD Defence & Security 2025
thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, one of the world’s leading naval companies, will be attending LAAD Defence & Security 2025, set to take place from April 1 to 4 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. As the largest defense and security trade show in Latin America, LAAD brings together top manufacturers of advanced technologies for Armed Forces, law enforcement, and Special Forces, while also highlighting key infrastructure and engineering projects.
With more than 185 years of expertise in naval engineering, thyssenkrupp Marine Systems will showcase its latest innovations in submarines, surface vessels, and maritime defense systems. As one of the world’s leading providers of conventional submarines and a benchmark in naval technology, the company is known for its technical excellence and innovation.
A major highlight of the company’s presence at LAAD is the Tamandaré-class Frigate Program, a strategic partnership with the Brazilian Navy through the Águas Azuis joint venture, which includes thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, Embraer Defense & Security, and Atech. This program marks a significant step in modernizing Brazil’s naval fleet with the construction of four state-of-the-art frigates.
Based on the renowned MEKO® class, these multi-mission frigates are widely used by navies around the world. Their modular design enables seamless local integration, efficient technology transfer, and cost-effective maintenance and upgrades.
Equipped with cutting-edge radars, sensors, and weaponry, the frigates also feature a hangar and flight deck for helicopters. With a length of 107.2 meters, a displacement of 3,500 tons, and a range of 5,500 nautical miles, they can reach speeds of up to 25 knots (approximately 47 km/h), ensuring high operational efficiency for advanced naval missions.
Backed by a team of over 8,000 specialists worldwide, thyssenkrupp Marine Systems offers a full-spectrum portfolio, covering a broad range from design and production to command and weapons systems. Its operating unit for naval electronic systems, ATLAS ELEKTRONIK, which is one of the leading players in sonar and combat management systems, further enhances the company’s capabilities, solidifying its position as a top-tier provider of comprehensive naval solutions.
Brazil’s Most Advanced and Innovative Naval Project
thyssenkrupp Marine Systems’ commitment to innovation and sustainability is reflected in its cutting-edge maritime defense technologies. The Tamandaré-class Frigate Program is a prime example, with frigates being built in Brazil using a high percentage of locally sourced components - driving technology transfer and strengthening the country’s naval industry.
The initiative has already achieved major milestones, including the launch of the first frigate in August 2024, the keel laying of the second in July 2024, and the first steel cutting for the third in November 2024. For the first time in Brazil’s history, three frigates are being built simultaneously - an unprecedented achievement that underscores thyssenkrupp Marine Systems’ expertise in naval defense technology and reinforces its long-term commitment to the Brazilian Navy.
The program is expected to create around 2,000 direct jobs, generate around 6,000 indirect jobs, and support approximately 15,000 additional jobs in related sectors such as hospitality, restaurants, and transportation - bringing the total to approximately 23,000 jobs. It is projected to generate R$ 500 million in tax revenue and engage around 1,000 Brazilian suppliers, with an estimated R$ 4.8 billion in local investment.
