The inventor of shock absorbers

BILSTEIN is one of the most prestigious automotive component brands in the world. Founded in 1873 by the German August Bilstein, it began its history in the early stages of hardware manufacturing.

After decades of developing nickel plating, chrome plating and automotive component supply methods, in 1954 Hans Bilstein creates the first gas pressure monotube shock absorber, which would pave the way for the brand's worldwide success. Renowned automakers and motorsport teams rely on its suspension technology to deliver outstanding performance on the track – whether in everyday use, off road or on the racetrack.

In 1957, the BILSTEIN shock absorber becomes part of Mercedes-Benz cars exclusively. Since then, the quality of German technology has been synonymous with confidence for several car manufacturers, from Mercedes  C up to S Series,  BMW 5 and 7 Series, Porsche 911 and Maserati 920c.

In Formula 1, BILSTEIN also has a history of success, with great champions such as Niki Lauda and Alain Prost. In 2012, the brand celebrated another important achievement: in the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring (Germany), with three teams equipped with its technology on the podium.
